For Attorneys, Courts, and Probation Officers

Gateway Counseling works closely with defense attorneys, probation and community corrections officers, and the courts to make the referral process straightforward and the documentation reliable. If you're referring a client to us, here's what you need to know.

What We Provide

We offer the full range of services commonly required by courts and legal professionals in Spokane:

  • Substance use evaluations: Comprehensive psychosocial assessments using ASAM criteria, with written reports suitable for court submission, attorney review, or probation files.
  • Deferred prosecution treatment: Structured two-year outpatient program meeting Washington State deferred prosecution requirements, with ongoing compliance documentation.
  • Outpatient treatment: Multiple levels of care including Intensive Outpatient (IOP), Standard Outpatient, and Recovery Maintenance, matched to ASAM-determined level of care
  • ADIS (Alcohol & Drug Information School): Eight-hour court-approved educational course, offered the third Saturday of every month

Turnaround & Reporting

We understand that timelines matter in legal proceedings. Our standard turnaround:

  • Scheduling: We aim to get new clients in for their evaluation within one week of contact.
  • Written report: Completed and available within one week of the evaluation appointment.
  • Ongoing compliance reporting: We provide regular documentation of attendance, participation, and treatment progress for clients with active court or probation requirements; we'll coordinate directly with your office throughout.

If you have a time-sensitive situation, contact us directly and we'll do everything we can to accommodate it.

Insurance & Billing

We are in-network with most major insurance carriers, including Medicaid (Coordinated Care), Premera Blue Cross, Regence, Kaiser Permanente, Aetna, Ambetter, LifeWise, Asuris, and First Health. We also accept self-pay and offer reduced rate applications for clients with financial need.

For clients without insurance coverage, we work with them to identify options before services begin, and we won't leave billing as an unresolved obstacle to getting someone into care.

How Referrals Work

Referring a client to Gateway is straightforward:

  1. Contact us at referrals@gatewaycounseling.net or on the referral form at the bottom of this page with the client's name and contact information and any relevant legal paperwork or court orders.
  2. We'll reach out to the client directly to schedule their evaluation or intake appointment.
  3. With a signed release of information, we'll keep you updated on scheduling, compliance, and progress throughout treatment.

We're responsive to attorney and probation officer inquiries and understand that you need accurate, timely information to do your job. If something comes up with a shared client, we'd rather you hear it from us directly than find out at a hearing.

For Other Treatment Providers

If you're a residential facility, detox center, mental health provider, or outpatient provider looking for a reliable step-down or referral partner in Spokane, we're happy to connect.

Gateway specializes exclusively in outpatient substance use disorder treatment, which makes us a natural next step for clients transitioning out of higher levels of care. We have multiple levels of outpatient programming, including Intensive Outpatient (IOP), so we can meet clients where they are when they leave your program rather than placing them into a one-size-fits-all track.

What other providers should know:

  • We accept step-down referrals from residential and inpatient facilities and detox centers. If a client is ready to transition to outpatient care, we can typically get them scheduled within a week, reducing the gap between discharge and continued treatment.
  • We coordinate with co-occurring mental health providers. We focus exclusively on substance use disorder treatment and don't provide standalone mental health therapy, but we work collaboratively with mental health providers who are treating shared clients. With a signed release, we're glad to communicate directly with a client's therapist or prescriber.
  • We have availability. We don't maintain a significant waitlist for new clients, which matters when you're trying to get someone into care at a critical transition point.
  • We accept Medicaid and most commercial insurance. Insurance coverage is rarely a barrier to getting a referred client started with us.

To discuss a referral or establish an ongoing referral relationship, reach out directly at referrals@gatewaycounseling.net. We're always open to connecting with providers who share a commitment to continuity of care.
